About the NZ Corrections Officer Aptitude Test

The Department of Corrections uses aptitude testing as part of the Corrections Officer recruitment process. The test assesses whether applicants have the cognitive skills required to handle the complex decision-making, written communication, and calculation tasks that form part of daily corrections work.

The test typically covers two core areas:

Questions are multiple choice with four options each. The test is timed and taken as part of the formal application process.

Important: Corrections Officer recruitment is competitive. Many applicants underestimate the verbal reasoning component — particularly the true/false/cannot say format, which requires precise logical thinking, not general knowledge. The "Cannot Say" option catches many candidates who assume too much from the passage. Preparation is essential.

What Makes Corrections Officer Questions Different

Unlike general aptitude tests, Corrections Officer questions are set in a corrections context. Passages reference prisoner management, facility procedures, staff regulations, and legal classifications. Candidates who are unfamiliar with this context can find the reading comprehension sections disorienting — even when the underlying logic is straightforward.

TestReady's questions use realistic corrections scenarios so that nothing on test day catches you off guard.
